ICD patients can benefit from support
Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) are lifesavers, there is no question. These devices are placed under the skin to keep track of heart rate in people with a high risk of life-threatening arrhythmia. If an abnormal heart rate is detected, the device delivers an electric shock directly to the heart.
Despite the many benefits of ICDs, a 2022 study in Open Heart journal found that patients can experience anxiety and depression due to the challenges of living with the device. However, the study also found that ICD patients who attend a support group feel an improvement in overall mental well-being.
The study showed that support groups helped patients find ways to live with their ICD and cope with their limitations. Attending the groups also improved their knowledge and understanding of the device, which made it easier to return to normal life and activities.

Fortunately for the Delmarva Peninsula, TidalHealth offers a support group for people with ICDs to become more knowledgeable and comfortable with having the device. The group is open to patients, family, friends and caregivers. It allows participants to meet and share with others who have been through similar experiences. Registered nurses from the TIdalHealth cardiac rehabilitation program facilitate confidential group discussions, education and peer support.
