Keep your blood pressure in check

Have you been diagnosed with high blood pressure? It wouldn’t be surprising - nearly half of U.S. adults, 47 percent, have it, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a common condition in which the force of blood against the artery walls is too high, meaning your heart is working too hard. This can cause serious health problems, such as heart disease, stroke and kidney failure. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of these complications.

Lifestyle changes can help lower blood pressure

First and foremost, it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This includes eating a healthy diet, getting regular exercise and avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption. Eating a diet low in salt and rich in fruits and vegetables can help lower your blood pressure.

Exercise and diet: Keys to lowering blood pressure

Getting at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day can help keep your blood pressure under control as well. Take a walk, ride a bike or head to the gym to keep arteries in check. You can get medically supervised workouts tailored to help you conquer high blood pressure in an Adult Fitness program

Medications and natural remedies can help

Another important step in managing high blood pressure is to take any medications prescribed by your doctor. This may include medications to lower your blood pressure, as well as medications to treat any underlying conditions that may be contributing to your hypertension

In addition to lifestyle changes and medication, you can also try some natural remedies to help lower your blood pressure. These may include relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing and meditation, which can help reduce stress and lower your blood pressure.

Work with your doctor to manage your blood pressure

It is important to work with your doctor to develop a plan that is right for you. A blood pressure screening should be part of your annual physical, which will detect any changes over time and allow your provider to help you manage your blood pressure safely.

If you don’t have a regular primary care provider, check out a listing of nearby practices to find out who is accepting new patients. On Delmarva, TidalHealth has a network of primary and specialty care providers with locations throughout the Delmarva Peninsula.

By following these steps, you can lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of serious health complications.
