Stay safe and healthy in expected winter storm

Delmarva is set to see a winter storm and cold weather conditions this weekend, so it’s important to take precautions and stay safe.

As of Friday, Jan. 23, the National Weather Service predicts the following for this weekend:

  • Night of Saturday, Jan. 24, into Sunday: Two to four inches of snow for Salisbury and Seaford; three to five inches of snow for Berlin
  • Sunday, Jan. 25: Two to four inches of snow and sleet for Salisbury; one to three inches of snow and sleet for Berlin; three to seven inches of snow and sleet for Seaford
  • Possible small amounts of precipitation expected after that for these areas

There are several potential health-related dangers in cold and inclement winter weather, including falls, hypothermia and frostbite. It’s also possible for shoveling to lead to heart attacks.

Sally Dowling, MD, chief medical officer at Atlantic General Hospital, was interviewed by CoastTV this week about the health-related dangers of the cold.

Local health departments have shared information about cold weather shelters.

In Wicomico County, residents can go to James M. Bennett High School at 300 E. College Ave. in Salisbury starting at 6 pm Saturday, Jan. 24, with the shelter staying open through Monday, Jan. 26. People should bring their own food, beverages and medications, and pets will be picked up and taken to another location.

HALO, or Hope And Life Outreach, shared that it has extended its hours and will be open this Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 am to 6 pm in addition to its nighttime hours.

There is an OCMD Cold Weather Shelter that opens on especially cold nights located at 10301 Coastal Highway in Ocean City. The shelter is open tonight, Jan. 23. To see if the shelter is open each day throughout the season, visit the Facebook page or call 443-880-5060.

The Dorchester County Health Department has shared on its website that the Extreme Cold Plan is in effect from tonight, Jan. 23, through Wednesday morning, Jan. 28. The Dorchester Temporary Shelter, normally an overnight shelter, will be open 24 hours from Saturday through Tuesday; call 443-447-2219 for information. Libraries are also open as daytime shelters during their usual operating hours.

There are also numerous other shelters throughout the area. Find a shelter near you by visiting healthydelmarva.findhelp.com, adding your ZIP code and visiting “Housing,” then “Temporary Shelter.”

The TidalHealth system may experience some closures as a result of the weather. To see information on closings, visit www.tidalhealth.org.
