Strategies for improving your health in 2024

New year, new goals: Setting the stage for healthy resolutions

Many of us often make resolutions related to our health and wellness as the new year begins.  Sometimes, we feel guilty or regretful about what we were not able to accomplish in the prior year and vow to make a fresh start. But, as the statistics show, very few people stick with their ideas past January. Why does this happen year after year, and how can we try for a different outcome this year?

Strategic planning: Choose manageable goals and break them down

First of all, as you think about areas for improvement, consider choosing one or two to focus on initially. Then, consider breaking down the goal into smaller steps that feel more manageable and give yourself a timeframe to get each one completed. For example, say your goal is to lose weight and be healthier. Perhaps you focus on drinking more water and making one dietary change, such as no soda or not eating after 7 pm, for one to two weeks. Once you’ve accomplished this, you may decide to add 10 minutes of walking daily or reduce fast-food consumption for the next two weeks and so on. You will gradually build these changes into your life, instead of starting an extreme diet or exercise program that will be hard to sustain.

Accountability, support and consistency for success

Other strategies that can help you be successful include having a partner or buddy to help hold you accountable.  Someone who will be supportive and consistent in reminding you of your goals. It helps to have these targets written down and in a location you will see regularly such as your bathroom mirror or next to your bed. Also, try to visualize how good you will feel when you meet your goals and perhaps consider a meaningful reward for yourself once it has been achieved. Remember to celebrate your successes and use this as motivation for the next step in your game plan.
