Struggling with BPH? Find relief with HoLEP
Have you been looking for a solution to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)? HoLEP, or Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate, could be your answer.
Griffith Batstone, MD, FRCS (Urol), FRACS, FRCSC, has joined TidalHealth Urology in Salisbury, bringing more than 30 years of experience in the medical field and more than 10 years of experience in performing the minimally invasive HoLEP procedure. He has helped about 2,000 patients get relief from BPH by performing HoLEP. He has been a mentor for surgeons learning this technique at large teaching Institutions nationally and internationally.
HoLEP is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a laser and a specifically designed endoscope to “peel” and extract all the benign prostate tissue, relieving pressure on the urethra and restoring normal urine flow.

BPH is a condition in which the prostate is enlarged but not cancerous. Before minimally invasive procedures were available to treat BPH, surgeons would do an open prostatectomy and scoop out the extra tissue.
“HoLEP is the only minimally invasive endoscopic procedure that removes all the benign prostate tissue adenoma, achieving the same results as open prostatectomy without the complications of open surgery,” Batstone said. “It is also unlike other BPH procedures that usually leaves significant residual tissue, resulting in repeat surgeries.”
The HoLEP technique is highly effective for men experiencing BPH, which can cause symptoms like:
-
Frequent urination, especially at night
-
Weak or interrupted urine stream
-
Difficulty starting urination
-
Feeling of incomplete bladder emptying
Dr. Batstone can also do surgery on any size prostate using HoLEP; other types of treatments are limited based on prostate size or patient prostate anatomy.
“There are numerous benefits to HoLEP, including a quicker recovery, virtually no bleeding and minimal burning with urination,” Dr. Batstone said. “Plus, patients can go home the same day.”
Patients can generally return to normal activities within a matter of days.
