7 ways to stay healthy during the holiday season
Worried about holiday parties and dinners derailing your weight-loss goals? Dr. Sandra Palavecino, who cares for patients at TidalHealth Medical Weight Loss & Bariatric Nutrition in Seaford, said people don’t have to avoid social functions to stick to their health plans.
Dr. Palavecino offered the following tips for staying on track:
Work together. It’s easier to stick with weight-loss goals as a group, even if the specific goals or plans are different. Whether it’s a friend, a significant other or a team of people, it’s easy to keep each other accountable.
Set achievable goals. Speaking of goals, set measurable and achievable ones. For example, rather than going straight to a run, start with a walk first.
Be prepared for food to be at holiday events. It won’t help to pretend as if unhealthy food won’t be at a holiday party, said Dr. Palavecino. Just come prepared.
Don’t waste your time on processed food. If you’re going to indulge occasionally when it comes to the holidays, choose the homemade treats over chips and crackers. She said home-cooked food is less processed — plus, a family member may have put a lot of time and effort into it.
Slow down with alcohol and sugary drinks. People may forget how many calories they’re drinking. Dr. Palavecino said these are empty calories — which have little, if any, nutritional value.
Bring something to share. Particularly for those with specific dietary restrictions, bring something that you are able to enjoy and also share with others.
Focus on the customs instead of the food. While food is part of many gatherings, take time to enjoy traditions and spend time with loved ones.
