Haven’t been to the doctor in a while? Here’s what to expect
For many, fall can be a time of getting back into a routine, enjoying the last bit of warm weather, and planning for the end of the year. It can also be a time to catch up on your healthcare needs, especially if your employer incentivizes you to get annual preventive visits or if you have met your insurance deductible already.
But if you haven’t been to the doctor in a while, it may feel a little daunting. Here are some tips to help you move forward, make the appointment and get the most out of your visit.
Your practitioner wants you to be as healthy as possible and will not judge you for not coming in sooner. They want to ensure any chronic health conditions you have are stable, screen you for any new conditions, and help you plan for the future.
Build a trusting relationship.
The more regularly you see your practitioner, the stronger your relationship will be. Building trust between you is key to a successful partnership.
Write down concerns.
If you have any concerns prior to seeing your practitioner, you should write them down and prioritize those that are most important to be addressed. If you have complex needs or multiple issues, you may have to see them a few times to get everything addressed in a timely manner.
Be prepared.
When you arrive for your visit, you can expect to have your vital signs taken. You’ll also review your current medications, supplements, medical, surgical and family history. Typically, your practitioner will also check to see if you are due for any immunizations or screening tests. After a review, an exam and discussion, your practitioner will order any tests, medications or referrals you require.
Schedule your next appointment.
One of the most important steps is to ensure you schedule your recommended follow-up visit.
