Beat the heat: Tips for running in the summer

Summer is a great time to enjoy outdoor activities, with running often being a top choice. However, the intense heat and humidity can pose challenges and potential health risks if proper precautions are not taken. To ensure you have the best summer running experience while prioritizing your safety, here are some quick tips to beat the heat and stay safe during your runs. 

Time your runs wisely

Plan your runs for the cooler parts of the day to avoid the peak heat hours. Early mornings or evenings are generally the best times as the temperatures are lower, and the sun's intensity is less harsh. Adjust your schedule accordingly to prevent overheating and dehydration. However, it's crucial to consider visibility during these hours, especially if you choose to run in the early morning or late evening. While running during low-light conditions, take precautions to remain visible to vehicles and other runners.  

Stay hydrated

Staying hydrated is crucial when running in hot weather. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, even when you're not running. It's a good idea to carry water with you during your runs or plan your route with water stops. 

Dress in lightweight clothing

Choose lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing that allows your skin to breathe. Opt for light-colored clothes that reflect the sun's rays rather than absorbing them. Wearing a hat or visor and sunglasses can also provide additional protection from the sun.

Protect your skin

Apply sunscreen with a high SPF to all exposed areas of your body before heading out. Sunburn not only damages your skin but also contributes to overheating. Remember to reapply sunscreen every couple of hours, especially when you’re sweating.

Pace yourself

Running in hot weather puts extra stress on your body. Adjust your pace and expectations accordingly. Slow down, listen to your body, and take walking breaks if needed. Prioritize your safety and well-being over pushing yourself too hard in extreme temperatures.

Find shaded routes

Choose running routes that provide ample shade. Running under trees or in areas with tall buildings can significantly reduce sun exposure and help keep you cool. Trail running can also be a great alternative, as trails often offer natural shade.

Stay informed about the weather

Keep an eye on weather forecasts and be aware of any heat advisories, air quality alerts and extreme weather warnings. If conditions are unsafe, it's better to postpone or modify your run. Safety should always be your top priority. 

Listen to your body

Pay attention to any signs of heat-related illness, such as dizziness, nausea, excessive sweating or rapid heartbeat. If you experience any of these symptoms, find a shady spot to cool down, rest and hydrate. If symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical attention immediately.

Take advantage of indoor alternatives

On particularly hot and humid days, consider indoor alternatives to running. Hit the treadmill at your local gym or engage in cross-training activities like swimming or cycling to give your body a break from the outdoor elements. 

Run with a buddy

Running with a friend not only motivates you but also provides an extra layer of safety. If possible, find a running buddy to join you during your summer runs. Look out for each other and stay alert for any signs of heat-related issues.
