The Motherload: Teaching children empathy and kindness

Bullying doesn’t just take place at school; it happens on the soccer fields, at camp and even in our own homes. The reality is kids can be hurtful with their words and actions, and it’s our job as parents to right the ship — to make them understand the importance of demonstrating kindness and compassion.

I’m not suggesting we stifle our children’s emotions; in fact, just the opposite. Help them identify and understand their own emotions, as well as the emotions of others. Encourage them to listen actively when someone is speaking to them and show empathy toward others' feelings.

I know what you're thinking — that's easier said than done. With so many negative influences in the world today, where do you start? Here are a few ways to instill these important traits in your children, regardless of their age:

  • Model empathy and kindness in your own behavior. Children learn by observing the behavior of others, so it's important to show empathy and kindness toward others, including strangers, friends, and family members. Treat others with respect and kindness and demonstrate compassion toward those who are struggling or in need.
  • Encourage children to engage in acts of kindness. Small acts of kindness, such as sharing toys or helping someone in need, can have a big impact on the lives of others. Encourage children to perform these acts of kindness on a regular basis and to think about the impact their actions have on others.
  • Teach children to be mindful of their words and actions. Help them to understand that words and actions can have a lasting impact on others, and that they should always strive to be kind and considerate in their interactions with others.

Teaching children empathy and kindness is not always easy, but it is a crucial part of their development. By creating a safe space where our children are comfortable expressing their emotions, we can help them understand their own feelings — as well as others’ emotions — and create a more empathetic and kinder society.
