Practical strategies for longevity and well-being
A common goal people have is to live a long and healthy life. It is one thing to live a long time, ‘lifespan’, and another thing to have many healthy years, ‘healthspan’. To be able to go through life without significant illness, pain, or disability requires our efforts in several key areas.
Nourishing your body: The role of a well-balanced diet
First, it starts with a well-balanced diet. It is important to take in adequate amounts of lean protein, fruits, vegetables and whole grains. It is equally important to limit sugar, processed foods, and saturated fat in your diet. Along with these concepts, drinking sufficient water is key. A good rule of thumb is to drink half your weight (in pounds) in ounces daily.

Active aging: Exercise and movement for a healthier tomorrow
Another component is getting adequate exercise and movement. To be active at an older age requires routine activity when you’re younger. A common recommendation is to get 150 minutes (about two and a half hours) of moderate exercise per week. Try making this something you enjoy, that’s fun, or can be done with others to stay consistent. It’s never too late to improve your fitness and there are modifications for those with limitations. Seek out guidance and direction from professionals if needed.
Sweet dreams and stress management: The importance of sleep and relaxation
In addition to diet and exercise, it is important to get at least seven hours of sleep a night for most adults as well as managing daily stress. One way to do this is to keep a consistent bedtime and awake time every day. Limiting caffeine, heavy meals, alcohol and exercise later in the day can also be useful to improve your sleep quality. Consider relaxing activities an hour prior to bed such as reading, listening to music, journaling, prayer or meditation, spending time in nature, as well as quality time with pets. This can also help lower stress and give your mind and body time for restoration and rejuvenation.
Seeking professional guidance if you need it
If you have difficulty in any of these areas of life, consider making an appointment with your primary care provider to discuss options for help and support.
