Physical activity leads to good health

Embrace the power of movement: How physical activity enhances health

No matter your age, there are many benefits to staying active.

Enhance cardiovascular health

First, it has long-term positive impacts on the health of your cardiovascular system, which includes your heart and blood vessels. It helps strengthen your heart, lower your blood pressure and your resting heart rate, and improves blood flow to your legs and brain.

Maintain muscle strength and function

Exercise keeps your muscles strong, which can help prevent injury and loss of function as you age.

Combat stress and elevate well-being

Lastly, it can help reduce and manage stress, which can improve your quality of sleep and overall happiness.

Incorporating exercise into your routine

It is recommended that all adults get 150 minutes (about 2 and a half hours) of moderate exercise per week. This can be broken down into manageable bites, such as a 15-minute walk, swim, or bike ride; a 30-minute kickboxing or aerobics class; or vigorous cleaning or yard work at your home. It is also encouraged to include some form of strength training in your routine two to three days per week, along with regular stretching to improve flexibility.

This can be overwhelming if you are not used to regular exercise or if you have physical limitations, but all movements can be modified for your ability level. If you need help getting started, consider meeting with a trainer at a gym to design a program and show you how to use equipment safely. Some neighborhoods have a gym that may be open to non-residents or consider your local YMCA for resources.

Ultimately, consistency is key, and having a workout buddy can help keep you accountable. It can also make exercising fun. Keep in mind, there are many fitness programs with apps so you can access classes and programs while at home or on the go.
