Farmer's market

From farm to table

Living on Delmarva has many benefits, and one of the most pleasant is being close to the sources of our fresh food. Rather than being picked early and traveling long distances in a truck, the fruit and vegetables on Delmarva are fresh and local, if you know where to look. Here are some of the best places to get produce and other artisanal goods at farmers markets in our region. This isn’t a complete list, just some highlights to get you started. Before embarking on a road trip, you might want to double check the hours on their websites or Facebook pages, because weather can affect their plans.

Year-round

  1. Camden Avenue Farmers Market, 1401 Camden Ave., Salisbury, Tuesdays from 2:30 to 5:30 pm. This market enlivens your mid-week with fresh produce; you will often find baked goods, local eggs, dairy and fish here too.
  2. Ocean Pines Farmers & Artisans Market, White Horse Park, 239 Ocean Parkway, Ocean Pines. Saturdays, 8 am to 1 pm. There is something for everyone at this market - in addition to seasonal produce, you can find baked goods, dairy, household plants, floral arrangements and handmade goods.

Seasonal - Maryland

  1. Salisbury Shore Fresh Farmers Market, 221 East Market Street, Salisbury. Saturdays 8 am to noon, May to November.
  2. Princess Anne Shore Fresh Growers Farmers Market, 30251 Prince William Street, Princess Anne. Thursdays from 3 to 6 pm, June through October.

Amish markets

If you’re looking for locally raised meats, dairy and fresh baked goods, Delmarva’s Amish community comes through. Some of these might be a bit of a trip from where you live, but trust us - an Amish pretzel straight from the oven is well worth the travel.

  1. Dutch Country Market, 11233 Trussum Pond Rd Suite 1, Laurel, Del., Thursday to Saturday, 9 am to  5 pm (there’s an Amish market with the same name in Laurel, Md., but we’re only talking Delmarva here). This is a nice place to stop for a sandwich with fresh deli meat or a coffee with some of their home-baked goods, and they have handcrafted furniture to browse as well.
  2. Easton Amish Market, 101 Marlboro Avenue, Easton. Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 pm, Saturday, 9 am to 3 pm. Fresh and cooked meats, dairy, produce and baked goods are all winners; there’s also a homemade candy stand that is very popular for Easter. It’s almost impossible to leave without getting one of the pretzels, which you can watch being made.
  3. Spence’s Bazaar, 550 S New St., Dover. Tuesday and Friday, from 7:30 am to 5 pm, and Saturday from 7:30 am to 3 pm. Spence’s is a huge flea market, but their Saturday breakfast can’t be beat, and their baked goods and pretzels are legendary. Look for fresh meat and dairy here as well.

Delmarva also has a plethora of seasonal farm stands, so keep your eyes open and you might discover amazing apple cider, fresh-picked peaches and even backyard zucchini.
