The Motherload: Healthy Halloween treats

A spooky twist on good nutrition

Halloween is a time of spooky costumes, haunted houses, and, of course, candy. While indulging in sugary treats is a Halloween tradition, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the holiday while still prioritizing your kids’ health. Here are some delicious and nutritious Halloween treats that will satisfy your sweet tooth without leaving your little ones with a sugar crash.

Fruit monsters

Turn ordinary fruits into ghoulish delights by creating fruit monsters. Use grapes, blueberries, and strawberries for eyes and mouths, and stick them onto slices of apples, bananas, or oranges using a dab of yogurt or nut butter. These spooky creations are not only fun to make but also provide vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants.

Dark chocolate dipped fruit

Dark chocolate is a healthier alternative to milk chocolate, as it contains less sugar and more antioxidants. Dip slices of banana, strawberries, or apple wedges into melted dark chocolate and allow them to cool. The combination of the sweet, creamy chocolate and the natural sweetness of the fruit is sure to satisfy your candy cravings.

Pumpkin seeds

Don’t throw away those pumpkin seeds when carving your jack-o'-lanterns. Roasted pumpkin seeds are packed with nutrients like magnesium, zinc, and healthy fats. Simply wash and season the seeds with a pinch of salt or your favorite spices, then roast them until golden brown for a crunchy and nutritious Halloween snack.

Trail mix

Create your own Halloween-themed trail mix by combining unsalted nuts, dried fruits, and a handful of dark chocolate chips or cocoa nibs. This portable snack is not only delicious, but also provides protein, fiber, and healthy fats to keep you energized during your spooky adventures.

Yogurt parfaits

Layer Greek yogurt with Halloween-colored fruits like orange mandarins and blackberries. Top it off with a drizzle of honey for natural sweetness. Greek yogurt is rich in protein and probiotics, which can support your digestive health.

Popcorn hands

Fill plastic food-safe gloves with air-popped popcorn and use a candy corn as the fingernail. Tie the gloves closed with a decorative ribbon, and you have a spooky, yet healthy, treat that’s perfect for Halloween parties.

Halloween treats: Scare away sugar with healthy options

This Halloween, there’s no need to feel haunted by the prospect of unhealthy sweets. With a little creativity and some nutritious ingredients, you can enjoy delicious treats that won’t give you a sugar fright. So, whether you’re hosting a Halloween gathering or trick-or-treating with the kids, consider these healthier alternatives to keep your holiday both fun and nutritious.
