Taking medication? Be aware of the heat and sun's impacts
As the temperature rises, it’s important to understand how it can affect your medications and your body. Here are some tips to enjoy summer without melting, fainting or sunburning in odd places.
Be mindful of the sun
Some medications can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, increasing the risk for rashes or sunburn — even with minimal exposure. Use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and reapply it every two hours; wear protective clothing; and try to avoid direct sunlight during peak hours (10 am to 4 pm). Keep an eye on the UV index on your phone — cloudy days may surprise you! Before leaving the pharmacy, ask if your sun exposure should be limited while using your new medication.
Medications to watch for include:
-
Antibiotics (doxycycline, Cipro, Bactrim)
-
Diuretics (hydrochlorothiazide or furosemide)
-
Heart medications (amiodarone)
-
Acne treatments (retinoids)
-
NSAIDs (ibuprofen or naproxen)
Stay hydrated
Dehydration is more likely in hot weather due to increased perspiration; some medications increase fluid loss or affect electrolyte balance. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids each day and watch for signs of dehydration. Signs of dehydration include dizziness, dry mouth and low urine output. Ask your pharmacist if any of your medications require you to monitor your hydration.
Common examples:
-
Diuretics
-
Blood pressure medications
-
Diabetic medications (Jardiance, Farxiga)
-
Lithium

Keep cool
Your body self-regulates temperature. Certain medications may impair that function and increase the risk of heat exhaustion. During the hottest part of the day, avoid excessive physical activity and stay in cool, shaded or air-conditioned areas when possible. Listen to your body and take it seriously if you feel unusually tired, nauseated or dizzy.
Some meds you may recognize include:
-
Antihistamines
-
Sleep aids
-
Heart meds (beta blockers)
-
Antipsychotics
Protect your meds
Most medications should be kept at room temperature, unless otherwise specified. High heat and humidity can affect the stability and effectiveness of many medications.
Avoid storing or leaving your meds:
-
In direct sunlight or in a window
-
In a hot car
-
In the bathroom during steamy showers
